Dunaway Gardens was founded in 1936 by two visionaries: Dr. Olley King, a respected local dentist, and Mary Virginia Dunaway, the daughter of the prominent William Robinson Dunaway. The two purchased the 47-acre tract of land, originally part of the Dunaway family legacy, to create a public recreational area. From the beginning, the pair had big plans for Dunaway Gardens. First and foremost, Olley and Mary wanted to create a place of beauty and refuge for the public. As part of that effort, they brought thousands of flowers, shrubs, and trees to the area and set up rock gardens with crawling vines, a wide variety of woodland hardwoods, and rare and exotic trees such as magnolia, Chinese Elm and Bald Cyprus. In addition to the breathtaking horticulture, Olley and Mary also designed and constructed pathways, terraces, springs, archways, and Greek-inspired sculptures throughout the gardens.
